What do Lawyers actually do?

Thu, 19th Apr 2018

Funnily enough this question has proven more difficult to answer than we first thought it would be. You may have a picture in your mind with Paul Newman in “The Verdict” or Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men”. That’s the romantic version. The reality of what we do at Carroll Goldsmith Lawyers is somewhere closer to “Erin Brockovich”.

In many cases a legal firm’s “bread and butter” is uncontroversial, being compliance-based matters like Wills, Probate and estate planning, business mergers and sales, employment contracts and the like also fall into this category. Then we get more into the battle grounds with disagreements between two or more parties like family law, property settlements, business partnership dissolution or property issues. In these cases, you need to know what your legal position is, what the probability of success is and then whether it is in your commercial interests to pursue or continue any claim. Of course, we are there for you when things get tough, but we’ll guide you through the happy times too. Whether that’s sorting the legalities of an exciting new business partnership or resolving a complex family law dispute, our role is to remove the stress from your life.

As lawyers, we are generally risk averse, and we therefore like to identify all the possible risks. At times this may frustrate our clients until we explain that it is our role to protect their interests and find the best solution for them, and that we would be doing them a disservice if we did not identify and deal with anything that may arise in the future.

You don’t want us to tell you that we lose sleep over getting the right result for you, even if it’s true! We do spend a lot of our time anticipating problems and preparing for them. We do our best to shield our clients from unnecessary problems and look to provide practical solutions that assist our clients meet their objectives.

Some may feel that a legal battle only benefits the lawyers, so how can you trust that the advice given will benefit you? Here is our 5-step process to make sure that you are empowered to make the right decision.

•              Firstly, we give you a free 30-minute confidential consultation to understand your needs;

•              We work with you to unfold any quick solutions or practical advice that can be given;

•              We are honest with your chances of success and sometimes we will tell you what you don’t want to hear when that is necessary;

•              We will give you a firm estimate so you know exactly what the costs are going to be; and

•              We will research and inform you at all stages of the project, claim or action as it progresses.
